A Farmer’s Dream

Directly behind today’s shop, on a small hill, you can see a little farm with a red silo. This farm is where Valley View Oak originated in 1989. This farmer, Eli Yoder, had a dream. His dream was to build furniture with his two boys on the family farm. When this dream finally became reality, Eli Yoder discovered his solid wood dining room tables were a hit. Eleven years from it’s conception, Valley View Oak had grown to such a size that Eli decided to pass the company on to someone more willing to manage such a thriving business.

Growing up on a farm, Dan Mast was also instilled with a great work ethic early on. His grandfather was a farmer also, but would build dining tables whenever he found spare time. Because of this, Dan Mast was privileged to eat all his childhood meals on a solid wood handcrafted table built by his grandfather. This experience with great furniture created in Dan an appreciation for the fine furniture trade. So when Dan heard Eli Yoder’s situation with Valley View Oak, he decided to continue the heritage his grandfather started.

A Trip Into Amish Country

Winding down a small country road, you’d better keep your eyes open and your pace slow. At any time you are likely to pass a small produce stand, a breathtaking view of the patchwork Amish landscape or come up behind a slow-moving, horse-drawn buggy. Often used as a peaceful getaway, Amish Country in Holmes County, Ohio, is full of pleasant suprises and homestead memories. Whether it’s the great, home-cooked food, unique shops or impressive countryside that continue to draw people to Amish Country, each one is great to experience in their own right and should be seen at least once in your lifetime.

Where does Valley View Oak fit in all of this? If you take the winding County Road 652 out of Mt. Hope, you’ll spot us tucked into the valley. Surrounded by cornfields and farms, the setting is surreal to many but it is simply home to us.
